sustainability

At Ceravolo’s we channel the strengths of each generation to look to the future, maximise the present and learn from the past. Evolution and innovation is an important part of the equation. Sustainability and the principles of ensuring longevity of people, profit and the planet are the foundation that informs all our business choices.

Apple netting

Permanent apple netting has a variety of advantages. To begin with, it reduces water evaporation by 50% which in turn reduces overall water use by the same amount.

It reduces the amount of wind that reaches the fruit which prevents rubbing and marking. As well as protecting the fruit from sunburn and severe weather events such as hail.

cravo- RETRACTABLE ROOF GREENHOUSE

At our Myponga farm we have installed a retractable roof greenhouse over almost 3 hectares of cherry orchard. This greenhouse is attached to a weather station and opens and closes based on when it is ideal for fruit to ripen. The greenhouse also protects crops from adverse weather events and minimises waste. The structure can be closed when spraying and fertilising which prevents any drift and allows maximum uptake of whatever is being applied. Cravo is said to net yields 3-4 times higher than traditionally grown outdoor cherries.

Irrigation

Under the harsh Australian sun we need to be conservative with our irrigation systems to reduce water loss. We use drippers, instead of sprinklers, to disperse the water so that we know it is going directly where it’s needed.

We use underground probes to monitor water levels in the soil so we no longer rely on the appearance of the soil but on accurate readings. This means we do not use any more water than we need to.

solar panels

We covered most of our apple packing and juicing sheds with solar panels. This reduces our fossil fuel footprint and allows for economic efficiency.

research and development

There have been numerous advancements in agriculture over the past 70 years to aid growers, benefit harvests and reduce environmental impact. Each of these changes the Ceravolo family have taken on have been carefully calculated and skilfully rolled out. The Ceravolo group of companies represent a vertically integrated supply chain that harnesses, value adds and thoughtfully re-uses traditional waste streams to create valuable products and reduce our environmental impact.
